The secret ingredient here is to use a folding and tracing technique, to create a symmetrical design! (symmetrical= the same on both sides)
INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1: Choose one of the attached bird images and print it out. Fold it in half. Also fold your white drawing paper in half. Make sure you fold both papers in the same direction.
STEP 2: Starting with the head and body first, draw the 1/2 of your bird on the folded paper with pencil. Next, draw your 1 wing and any floral designs from the flower handout. Trace your drawing with a black marker like a Sharpie.
STEP 3: Here comes the fun part! Flip your paper over and hold it up to a sunny window (or a light-box table if you have one). Use the light from the window to trace your wing and floral design on the back of your folded paper. TIP: do not trace the head on the back of your paper, or you will end up with a bird with 2 heads. Just draw a simple half circle to make the back of the bird's head.
STEP 4: Open up your paper and you should see a symmetrical bird! Wow!! Use your sharpie to add more symmetrical designs to your paper if there are any areas that look empty. You can also add other details like stripes inside your bird.
STEP 5: Add color! Use any materials you want, like marker or colored pencils. Just remember to make the color symmetrical, too. This means that whatever colors you chose for one side of the drawing, use them again on the other side. Have fun!
